How to Use Viral Outliers

Follow these steps to discover viral content and grow your business

1

List Your Niche Profiles

Submit your competitor TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube niche profiles on the profiles page (if they are not in the database yet). Viral Outliers keeps an eye on their posts and finds the ones that outperform.

Some ways to find new social media accounts in a niche are:

  • Hashtag or regular niche term searches.
  • Follow a profile to see related profiles.
  • Study follows: Look at what profiles other niche creators follow for inspiration.
  • Create account:That is "interested" in your niche and scroll homefeed.
  • Viral Outliers: Look up your niche in the content tab to find new creators.

Crawling the posts can take a few minutes to a few 10's of minutes depending on how busy the servers are with processing other user submissions. Feel free to add other profiles in the meantime.

It is also recommended to group these profiles into watchlists. This is because you can filter content on watchlists instead of single profiles.

You can create a watchlist in the sidebar on the right (+ sign), click the profile you want to add to a watchlist, and then click on the watchlist you want to add the profile to.

Looking up with watchlist filters is way faster than looking up profiles one by one.

As a side note, you also have the ability to add notes to the watchlists and profile entries for things to keep in mind etc.

Discover Viral Outlier Posts

Once you have created your watchlists, your viral outliers research becomes extremely easy.

On the watchlists page, the watchlist detail page, and the watchlist popup on the profiles page, you have buttons with "browse watchlist content".

If you press on these buttons, you get sent to the content page with the watchlist filter activated. You can also just go to the content page and activate the watchlist filter yourself.

On the content page, you can also add extra filters like date range, minimum views, platform, etc.

Group Posts Together (optional)

For many types of short-form content, steps 1 and 2 are often enough to get a lot of viral outliers inspiration.

You simply make your own remixed version of each post and start posting your own versions until sooner or later you get your own viral outliers.

For slightly longer posts about a certain subject, it can be worth to group posts into projects maps (which can have submaps too).

You can also just group all outliers of certain categories into project maps to return to them later.

The following paragraphs are subjective but my current impression is that the social media platforms don't care too much about follower count when deciding what videos should go viral.

That means the main reasons content does not pop off are:

  • Content quality: Sometimes we think we model a post but actually get some important quality points wrong.
  • Shadow ban: Some platforms, mainly looking at you Tiktok, implement annoying shadow bans and/or location targeting.
  • Competitors: Viral hooks and content from a year ago will probably do less well since other competitors use these too. Use a more recent date filter in the content tab to stay ahead of your competitors.
  • Variance:Randomness might just be variables you don't understand (yet?) but for some vague reasons, posts will sometimes go viral, sometimes they don't. This is why you keep posting and changing things up over time.
